PubMed Central and Medline

To limit articles in medline to articles only available in PubMed Central, do a search and add PMC (articles in PubMed central have a ID number that starts with PMC) For example: thalidomide and pmc. However, some articles are not yet available in PubMed Central. In this case it will say [Available on 12/15/09]. So, if you want only the ones that you can see right away, you can do: thalidomide and pmc not [available. it's a little bit complicated but it should work.

MaximumPC magazine

MaximumPC is an online computer magazine that is about PC hardware and software. It is published monthly and can be accessed for free.

WHMIS Certificate Printing

Students are currently asking for help printing out their WHMIS certificates.
Please note that they are not meant to be printed out. The quiz results go electronically to the Health and Safety Officer. She creates the certificates, signs them and sends them to the student's class. If they need them right away they can phone the Health and Safety Officer and then go and pick them up themselves.
Of course, if a student wants an unauthorized copy they can be printed. Highlight the course that has been completed, choose "print certificate", and change the paper orientation to lands

2 New Wiki Projects.

Here's a new wiki application: a new search engine called Wikia Search (Thanks to UBC Academic Search - Google Scholar Blog). Like other wikis, authorship is shared. In this case, selection and ranking are shared privileges. Wikia Search is created by the same creator as Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that Encyclopedia Britannica will now share authorship of its articles with the general public in a Wikipedia-like move to increase usage.

Printing problem at Coquitlam campus

I've encountered a few students who had trouble with printing at DL. Haven't seen this problem yet at NW. The problem is when they tried to print a Word document, a "Print Job Billing" dialog box came up asking for a code. But the students still had print jobs left and they logged in with their own Novell.
Dave from CLS came to help a student this morning with this printing problem and got her to log off and log in again. She was then able to print. Dave said that CLS is aware of this printing problem and is trying to fix it. Something related to the server.
Anyway, if you encounter a student with this "Print Job Billing" problem, get the person to log off and log in again to see if it helps.

The strength of the wireless network at David Lam is, and always has been, weakest in the Library and in CEIT. The best place to connect is apparently in the atrium.

Telephone system switch June 2, 2008

The College has introduced VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) into the new buildings C&D as part of the David Lam expansion. To ensure a reliable, single point of contact for telephone/voice systems, services and support, all Douglas College Telephone/Voice systems and services will be transferred from the Facilities Services Department to the Centre for Educational & Information Technology (CEIT) as of June 2, 2008.
What will change?
- The Switchboard, including Lisa Martin’s position will move from its current 4800 location to Room 0600 in the CEIT area.
- Douglas College main telephone number remains the same: 604-527-5400
- The College’s main fax number remains the same: 604-527-5095. The fax machine will be relocated to the foyer of the 3100 CEIT area. You will continue to be advised when a fax comes in and where to pick it up from.
- All telephone/voice mail requirements, customer service, moves, additions & changes as well as cellular phone requests will be handled through the CEIT Help Desk at local 5330 or by email at "Help Desk". This includes all requests related to telephone/voice services for all Douglas College campuses as well as all Training Group locations.
- Facilities/Site services currently provided at the Switchboard not related to telephone or voice systems will remain with the Facilities Services Department. Please send your Building Service Worker (BSW) requests, room set up requirements, Heating/Ventilation as well as general site services requests to:

Learning Centre Summer 2008

The Learning Centre is gearing up to serve your students for the summer term. Over the summer, we will continue to provide tutoring in two modes -- on campus and online.
Our hours for on-campus tutoring are posted on the front door of each Learning Centre (NW - Room 2209; DL - Room A1040). On-campus tutoring has some of the following features:
•The focus is skill development in reading, writing, math, basic computer, and study skills.
•The tutoring is provided by weekly appointment rather than by drop-in.
Students who prefer something approaching a drop-in service should use the online service instead (see below).
•We also provide tutoring in course content when we have tutors able to tutor in a given course. Feel free to phone us to find out if we have tutors with background in any given area.
Our online tutoring service has the following features:
•It is mainly geared toward helping students with their writing skills.
oHowever, if students would like other kinds of help online, they should come and talk to us and we can see what we can set up.
•Unlike the on-campus tutoring, online tutoring also provides service in the evenings and on weekends.
•Students can access our on-line tutoring through the Douglas College website (from the home page, the student services page, or the Learning Centre page), or they can use the following web address: www.douglascollege.ca/onlinetutor.
We also have self-help resources, which students can find in the on-campus Centres and online.

Student Novell passwords

Good news. Students who forget their Novell passwords are no longer given those annoying temporary passwords. They are now taken directly to a page where they can enter a new one. Of course, we still have to help them because they need to be logged in to do this. Nevertheless, a very small step forward...
