Besides the emergency line (604-527-5452) to find out if the campuses are open in bad weather, there is another phone line that gives class cancellations. That phone number is 604-777-6242.

Printing Power Point slides for students
To print handouts rather than slides so the print job comes out faster and with less paper waste:
Go to File > Print and at the bottom where is says Print What, select handouts. Select how many mini-slides per page.

Printing/Downloading Attachments: hotmail and MyD
If students cannot print/download a hotmail attachment, forward the original message and attachment to MyDouglas, and do it from there.
If students seem to be blocked from opening their attachments in MyDouglas, this is due to the new pop-up blocker installed with the XP operating system on the student machines. To get around it and open the files:
Once the student tries to download their attachment, they'll have two windows pop up. They should say OK to the first one which asks if they noticed the information bar.
The second window with the big Detach File heading has a unobtrusive yellow bar at the top. Right click on it and select Download File... and follow the rest of the steps to open the attachment.

Tiny printing at word processing printer at NW
Very often lately, a student will print their document on the NW Word Processing computers and the results will be very small, even though all the settings look correct. To fix this problem the student should select the following:
> File> Print> Properties> Type is:> Choose Plain
Hopefully this setting will be changed at the end of the semester when those computers are reimaged.
Thanks, Amanda

Wireless Access to the Novell Network for Students
Students need to own (or borrow from AV) a laptop with a wireless card installed.
They need to have set up their Novell account on a DESKTOP computer first. This is because they can't get to the Novell account setup page on their laptop without first authenticating, and they can't authenticate until they have a computer account.
Then all they do is launch their preferred browser and an authentication page will come up where they do the usual and enter S + their student number followed by their Novell password.

Frank Leonard History BAR assignment
The following are examples of how Frank would prefer his students to cite JSTOR for the BAR assignment.

JSTOR and book reviews
JSTOR's search options are not that sophisticated, but they work adequately for this assignment. Students can use the advanced search screen and limit to "review" and add the author's name and key words from title in the "All of these words" search box. If they add author and key title words and then narrow to one field either title or author they will not get results.

WHMIS and nursing students
WHMIS is no longer on the NW Library ELF computers. Nursing students should go to open lab 5107 for the WHMIS program.
At DLam, it appears one MUST use the public log in and then set up a user name etc. if they are not in the system.

Technical Services has a new Catalogue Feedback Form on the Contact us page. If you notice a typo, or some other problem which you would like investigated, please fill out the form (or cut and paste the title) with a brief explanation and Technical Services will look into it. If you would like a reply you can fill that part of the form in as well or click no. Both staff and students are welcome to use the online form which replaces the paper Catalogue error forms.

H: drive from home
Instructions for employees who want to connect to the H: drive from off-campus are available on the upper portion of Amanda's desk or print out the .pdf file from the CEIT website http://www.douglas.bc.ca/ceit/.There are two variations: one for those who are using Windows XP and another for Windows 2000. It won't work if you're running any other kind of operating system.
* Mary discovered, rather unfortunately, that you will not be prompted to change your Novell password if it's nearing expiration when working from home. You will simply be locked out. A good tip if you suddenly find yourself unable to login.

MS Office XP for employees
MS Office XP and MS Windows XP Operating System is available for purchase by College employees. The same policies apply to these CDs as those on reserve, ie: they are only for home use and only for employees. For the time being they are available at CLS but plans include transferring the selling responsibilities to the bookstore. The Office XP package is $5 and the Operating System is $7. Older editions are still available on Reserve in the Library. No information about MAC versions as yet.

Students Borrowing from SFU
Douglas College students require nothing more than a valid student photo ID card in order to borrow directly from SFU. Many have been told that they require a COPPUL card. Douglas College is not a member of COPPUL, nor is it eligible to become a member. We have a separate agreement with SFU on a one year trial to extend reciprocal borrowing privileges to our students. Carole is sending a message to her contact at SFU asking him to make sure his staff are up to date on this issue.
Fraser River Initiative
Reciprocal Borrowing with Simon Fraser University, University College of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen University College and Douglas College
Background
At a meeting of the directors of Kwantlen College, Douglas College, University College of the Fraser Valley and Simon Fraser University last Spring a decision was taken to allow reciprocal borrowing for Faculty, Students and Staff at these institutions. These privileges were to be implemented in the Fall of 2004.
Who is eligible?
Current Faculty, Students and Staff at these institutions.
Reciprocal borrowing privileges are NOT extended to Alumni or Extra-mural Borrowers.
Verification of eligibility
You must present a current Douglas College Identification Card when you apply to receive a library card with one of our reciprocal borrowing partners.
Restrictions on Use
Reciprocal borrowing privileges are extended to all circulating items in the collections with the exception of the following:
- Audiovisual materials (videos, DVDs, slides, audio-tapes, etc.)
- Reserve materials
- Laptops
- Audio visual equipment
People holding reciprocal borrowing privileges will be able to make use of most library services. However they will not have access to:
- Interlibrary Loans
- Off campus access to electronic resources
Duration
This is a one year pilot project beginning September 1, 2004 and ending August 31, 2005.
Prior to the termination of the pilot project it will be reviewed and a decision will be made whether or not to continue with reciprocal borrowing.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks Carole

ERIC fulltext
To retrieve fulltext journal articles in ERIC, turn on the Fulltext limiter, and the only fulltext that will be retrieved will be journal articles (fulltext documents are not included at this time, but Ebsco is working on a fix).
To get fulltext documents, do not limit to fulltext. Change JOURNAL OR DOCUMENT to read DOCUMENTS. Most of what you retrieve should be fulltext, as basically all ED (ERIC documents) are now in fulltext as a result of a policy change at ERIC.

Scanners for students
Both campuses have a scanner available for student use in the Student Media Centres that are part of CLS, located beside room 3100 at NW and in room B1251 at Coq.
A self-serve system using wall calendars is in place. At NW, students go to room 3100 to book use of the scanner but they can drop in if there is no prior booking. If a student wants to use the NW scanner after 4:30 or on Saturday, s/he can go to Security and Security will allow use of the room after presentation of a current student card. The scanner is for course related use.
